Gender:Male (neutered)
Hercules came to us after Animal Control responded to reports of abandoned dogs. Seven dogs were found boarded up inside a house during the Kentucky summer heat—one dog per room, with plywood covering doors and windows. They were believed to have been left alone for up to two weeks. The conditions were severe and traumatic. Of those seven dogs, we now have only one left here at the shelter—Hercules. Because of what he endured, Hercules is a very fearful and timid dog. Loud noises and sudden changes startle him, and the shelter environment is hard on him. However, once he becomes familiar with a person, sound, or routine, he settles and shows his loyal, gentle side. Structure and consistency help him feel safe. Hercules truly loves being outside. With proper shelter and protection from the elements—especially since he is short-coated—he would thrive with outdoor time and space to decompress. He enjoys soft, gentle affection from the people he trusts and bonds closely once he feels safe. He would do best in a calm home without young children or small animals. A confident female dog his size could help him build confidence. He is still working on potty training and will need a patient but consistent adopter. Hercules isn’t an easy dog—but for the right person, he has the potential to become an incredibly devoted companion.
